Top Attractions

We have lots of amazing attractions in Ripon and lots of things to do. Find out about them now!

A must-see in Ripon is the Hornblower. This is a long-standing tradition with no signs of letting up. Every night of the year without fail, at 9pm, the Hornblower blows the horn in the Market Square, at the Obelisk in front of the town hall, and then tells the tale of the Hornblower tradition to all the onlookers (there are always lots!)

Lightwater Valley is a popular theme park with lots of rides for people of all ages. It is a great day out….

Fountains Abbey is a great place to visit to look at the ruins of the old abbey, or go to the cafe for lunch or breakfast. On a Saturday morning at 9:00 am they have a 5k, 2 lap Parkrun around the abbey and its grounds.

Brimham Rocks has got to be one of the best places in Ripon and all the surrounding areas for a walk or a dog walk. There are lots of rocks everywhere to climb and look at, it is great for kids to have fun on the rocks, and dogs love it there. At the end of the walk there is a gift shop where you can buy souvenirs, and there is a place to get ice-creams, drinks and other refreshing snacks.

Newby Hall is great for a day out in Yorkshire with loads of things to do, for children of all ages, including an adventure playground. There is a miniature railway which runs along the river Ure, it is a great ride, with great views of the amazing gardens. The tickets for the mini railway cost only £2.80 (under 2s are free) and £50 for a group of 20. There is a railway shop, which sells Newby branded souvenirs, hot and cold drinks, snacks, and the railway tickets. Newby Teddy is now on sale for £8.50, which comes with a free railway ticket.

No trip to Ripon would be complete without a visit to our majestic Cathedral – said to have provided inspiration to Lewis Carroll for Alice in Wonderland!

Curzon is the small local cinema near Ripon town square. It shows all the new and popular films, often on the day they come out. There are 2 different rooms for viewing a film, and each screen plays a different film, so make sure you go to the right one! They sell drinks and snacks at the cinema, so you don’t need to bring your own.

Thursday is market day in Ripon. The City is bustling and the market stalls are varied.
